Apartment K

He used a fire escape to walk out of your life.

Back inside, the floors are polished,

the heartbreak is clean.

and the iron ringing.

At least you’re alive, you think.

At least that clang in your breast.

There is something simple about it —

something like a bird

in the skeleton of a tree.
