He used a fire escape to walk out of your life. 

 

Back inside, the floors are polished,

the heartbreak is clean. 

 

You sit with a glass of whiskey

and the iron ringing. 

 

At least you’re alive, you think.

At least that clang in your breast.

 

There is something simple about it —

something like a bird

 

in the skeleton of a tree.
