Appleseeds

Listen to Christine Fellows read “Appleseeds”

What better food

than apple seeds — the fruit

within the fruit — locked in

like counter-curved twin

hazelnuts?

— Marianne Moore

Stillness interrupted —

soft-soled shoes skim linoleum, passing —

learns a rhythm over time

Together with the elevator, the intercom,

your unconscious breath finds traction in the din,

Leaning in

Time confined —

lunch carts clog the corridor, scattering —

learns to break the surface

Ruling out the bleeping machines, the nurses,

your unconscious seeks its counter-curved twin,

Locking in
