Wreckage

When Grimsvötn’s eruption wiped

out a steel bridge, floodwater bending

the massive beams like origami,

the rusted surface resembled a plane’s

wing cut deep into the earth. Land

was made indistinguishable from sky,

the ash so thick, locals could not tell

day from night. They became like us,

sleepwalkers wandering a widening road.
